SAY Vs TELL
Aunque os pueden parecer muy parecidos, estos verbos en inglés tienen usos distintos. Usamos «say» para «decir algo» y «tell» para «decir algo a alguien» o «contar algo».
SAY:
Utilizamos SAY cuando:
Queremos reproducir las palabras textuales que dijo alguien:
Peter said: «I want to sleep».
Si queremos usar say con un objeto personal, necesitamos usar TO:
Peter said to me : «I want to sleep»
Si queremos contar lo que alguien nos dijo sin reproducir las palabras:
Peter said she wanted to go to London.
Mary said to Peter that she needed his car.
Además usamos:
To say a name.
To say a word.
To say a sentence.
If you say so….
TELL:
Utilizamos TELL cuando:
Usamos un objeto indirecto detrás del verbo.
Peter told him that she needed his car.
Con el significado de «Contar»:
Tell me a joke.
Tell him a story.
Tell from or tell the difference:
Can you tell a British accent from an American accent?
Can you tell the difference between British and American accent?
Para dar órdenes o instrucciones:
I told him «Stop smoking».
Para dar y pedir información:
Can you tell me your phone number, please?
